Originally named "Brushy," Round Rock was established along the banks of Brushy Creek in 1848 by Jacob M. Harrell. Due to the existence of another town with the same name in Texas, Harrell and Thomas C. Oatts, the settlement's first postmaster, decided on the name Round Rock. This choice was inspired by a large rock in the middle of Brushy Creek, where they frequently fished. The renowned "round rock" served as a significant landmark along a frequently used route for cattle and goods heading north to the Chisholm Trail for trade. It marked a safe low-water crossing for traders.
Jesse Chisholm mapped out the main portion of the Chisholm Trail in 1865, which extended from Oklahoma to Kansas. All feeder routes, including the segment in Round Rock, became collectively known as the Chisholm Trail.
The construction of the International & Great Northern Railroad in 1876 played a crucial role in shaping Round Rock's future. The railroad aimed to connect Texas cities from the northeast to the southwest, crossing the Rio Grande and linking with the Mexican National Railroad. The tracks were laid east of the original Round Rock site, leading to the establishment of homes and businesses in the area initially referred to as "New" Round Rock, now recognized as Downtown. Old Town, situated along the Chisholm Trail road, retains its identity with restored buildings and a stone placard marking the historic site.
The railroad attracted both legitimate businesses and outlaws, including the infamous train robber Sam Bass. Following a series of heists by the "Sam Bass Gang," the Texas Rangers were directed by the governor to capture the bandits. Despite months of evasion, the gang was eventually betrayed by one of its members in exchange for immunity. The ensuing confrontation, known as the Sam Bass Shootout, occurred on July 19, 1878, in Downtown Round Rock.
While the era of outlaws and shootouts has passed, the City of Round Rock has transformed into a vibrant community with exciting attractions and events. Today, it is renowned as a prominent sporting destination, a family-friendly hotspot, and a hub for technology and business.
